As the new year turns, with it comes new hope, a new prospect, and a clean slate. For some, January is a moment for establishing goals and dreaming of what’s yet to come. Yet, as believers, how can we take steps toward aligning our plans with God’s will in this time of new beginnings?
In Proverbs 16: 3 (KJV), we are reminded:
“Do whatever you do unto the Lord; He will make your plans straight.”
This verse invites us to partner with God in setting our goals and dreaming about the future. It calls us to realize that our most productive intentions are those that are born out of prayer, informed by scripture, and compatible with His providence for our world.
Seek God First
Jesus tells us to “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
Focusing on God in our organization does not exclude God’s unseen direction and provision.
Set Goals with Faith and Humility
It’s easy to focus on achievements, milestones, or self-improvement. But what if our goals reflected what we want and who God is calling us to become? This may be the year to practice patience, forgive better, or spend some time helping others. It should be noted that success is not based on world success but on our devotion to God.
James 4:15 (KJV) “For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
Approach your aims with humility, that the high purposes of God are above the purposes of man.
Embrace New Beginnings
Isaiah 43:119 declares:
“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”
Pray Over Your Goals
A Prayer for the New Year
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of a new year and the fresh start it brings. While I plan my objectives and aspirations for the coming months, guide me by directing Your wisdom and counsel. Bring my wants in line with Your plan and grant me the strength to go wherever You direct that my schemes will be to Your honor and the love of the people about me. Thank You for not abandoning where I am and for giving me the hope for a new start upon which I can depend. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Moving Forward in Faith
In this month of January, let us turn to the new year as a chance to get to know God better and live out His will for our lives. As we set our goals with prayerful desire and hearts prepared by faith, we can confidently enter the new year confident that He will lead us down a road of hope, growth, and joy.
